"May I help you?" Hayley asked Mr. Farro polity.
" Is your grandmother here?" Mrs.Farro asked sternly.
"No, she's actually not, would you like to come in." Hayley crossed her fingers behind her back; hoping that she would say no and just go away. She wasn't in the mood for any of Josh's none-since today.
"Yes please, we need to discuss yesterday's incident." Once those words left Mrs. Farro's mouth,Hayley's eyes went directly to Josh. Did Josh really go home crying to his grandmother? What a baby Hayley thought as a sly smirk appears on her face.
"Sure." Hayley steps aside allowing both Josh and his grandmother to enter. A small gasp escapes Hayley's lips as she notice for the first time today that Josh was walking crutches and his foot was in a cast. Something that hadn't been there the previous day. "Oh my god, what happen?" She asked with the little concern she had for him.
"Broke my foot yesterday." Josh says simply, making no eye contact with Hayley what so ever.
"How?" The words left Hayley's mouth so quickly, that it never registered to her that it might had been her fault.
"We'll actually you did it." Josh final glances up at Hayley .Her eyes grow widely.
"No I didn't I ....." Hayley stops as yesterday's actions began to replay in her head. "Oh!" She twisted her lips, glancing at the cast on Josh's foot.
The three sat in silence for what seemed like for ever, before Mrs Farro had grown impatient. "Isn't there more you'd like to say to my grandson?" Hayley stares at Mrs. Farro confused. Sure she never meant to hurt Josh, but he kind of got what he deserved, and she felt it wasn't right for her to apologize to him, when he never apologize to her. " like apologize to him ." Josh's grandmother suggested after thinking that Hayley wasn't understanding what she was getting at.
"Grandma, I've already told you I don't need an apology,it wasn't Hayley's fault ."Josh interrupts.
"Josh she broke your foot, and you deserve an apology. I'm sure Hayley feels somewhat bad for what she's done, and is willing to apologize for actions." Mr. Farro explains.
"With all do respect Mrs. Farro, I get we're your coming from, but I will not apologize; none of this would have happened if Josh hadn't disrespected me first by having a girl he know I strongly dislike in my car. And besides I asked him twice to let go of me, and he did not." Hayley explains now feeling slightly frustrated.
"No you don't think you understand, that is just a car, this is my grandsons. How would you like it if someone broke your foot, and didn't feel the need to say sorry." Hayley could clearly tell that Mrs. Farro was upset with her, but still she made no effort to apologize.
"I'm sorry you feel that way, but it's not just a car to me." Hayley continues to stand up for herself.
"Grandma it's fine lets just go." Josh struggle to stand. Mrs. Farro sighs in defeat. For a minute Hayley thinks its all over as she walks Josh and his grandmother to the door, but is startled when to see her own grandmother had just pulled into the driveway.
"Shit." She cursed under her breath. It couldn't be noon yet. Could it.
"Hello Pam , what do I owe to this unexpected visit." Hayley's grandmother says playfully, but quickly notice the hostility in the atmosphere. "What's going on? And why aren't you in school Hayley?" Mrs.Williams voice is now seriously. Mrs. Farro glances at Hayley then Josh. Josh glances at Hayley. Hayley doesn't know what to do, she was sure that Mrs. Farro would spill the beans , and she'd be dead for sure.
"Nothing, we were just leaving." Josh speaks first, and begins to head back across the street to his house.
"Your granddaughter broke my grandsons foot and another girls nose yesterday afternoon, because she was involved in a fight." Mrs Farro exclaimed for a final time.
"Is this true Hayley?" Her grandmother asked not so shocked. Hayley can only sigh, knowing that her grandmother want's no if ands or buts, because of the promise she had made the last day of summer.
"It is not her fault, I've already told you, so can we please just drop this." Josh finally snaps, falling as he turned to walk away. Everything from there seemed to have happened in slow motion as if Josh would never hit the ground. Everyone gasp running to his aid. Hayley grips Josh's arm as Mrs. Farro gripped the other wanted to help him up. " Get off me, I can do it myself." Josh knocks both his grandmother And Hayley's hand away, and stands on his own.
****************************
"You will apologize to him tomorrow, drive him to and from school and help him with any chores he has at home. And you are grounded for a month skipping school yesterday , and for getting in that fight, do you understand?" Hayley grandparents has decided her fate for the next month and there was nothing she could do about it. Hayley knew not to argued, knowing that it would only get her into more time.
"Yes ma'am I understand. May I please be excused now?" Hayley asked quietly.
"You haven't touched your dinner honey." Her grandfather says sympathetically.
"I'm not really hungry at the moment." Her grandfather nods. Hayley places her dinner napkin over her uneaten food, pushing seat back, standing and quickly exiting the room. Hayley went straight to her room, throwing herself on to her bed, and just stared at the ceiling, thinking about him. That all of this was Josh's fault. Why did she have to apologize to him, why did she have to be his personal driver, but most importantly why did she have to do his chores; he had a broken foot, not brain damage.
After an hour Hayley still found herself awake thinking on the subject. And by now she was quite tired of it. Pulling herself off the bed, she walks over to her window; lifting it and allowing the warm breeze of the night sky enter her room. With her guitar in hand she carefully climbs out the window, taking a seat a few inches away from the window . Hayley's grandmother never liked the idea of her sitting on the roof of the house, fearing that she'd fall, but Hayley didn't care, she loved always loved the night sky, one of the things she never really got to enjoy while living in New York. Hayley slowly begins to strum away, singing aloud the words that began to pop into her head freely.
"Can't make my own decisions or make any with precision Well, maybe you should tie me up so I don't go where you don't want me You say that I've been changing, that I'm not just simply aging Yeah, how could that be logical? Just keep on cramming ideas down my throat." Hayley practically shouted the last line not noticing the persons only a few feet watching her every move...
**************************
Josh sot in his room, staring at the Tv, watching reruns of Jersey Shore. How wonderful he thought. Than Hayley slipped into his thoughts. He never intended to get Hayley in any trouble. In fact he just wanted to brush it all aside and get own with his life. Josh thoughts were broken as he hear the sound or a beautiful girls voice, and the sound of amazing guitar playing.
Leaving his crutches lying beside the bed he hops on one foot over to his window. A small smile forms on his lips, as he notices its Hayley sitting on her roof near her window. Josh slightly cracks is window so he could hear her better, but stays hidden behind his nave blue curtains. Josh then hops to the opposite side of his room, flipping his bedroom light off, to make sure he wouldn't be spotted.
The rest of the night Josh found himself listening to Hayley's beautiful voice, until she went back inside. That night he had, had the most amazing peaceful sleep of his life. It was like his own personal lullaby...
****(Next Day)****
" Hayley make sure you apologize to him today." Hayley's grandmother say as Hayley was about to leave for school. Hayley only nods. She climbed into her car, slowly backs out her drive, and pulls into Josh's. Not shutting the car off, she climbed out, opening the jammed passenger door and waited for Josh to come out. With in no time Josh was in the passenger seat next to her, and they were off to school. Neither of them said a word most of the ride, but Hayley felt that she might as well get her apology out if the way weather Josh apologized to her or not.
"I'm sorry." Hayley finally speaks; glancing at Josh before returning her eyes to the road.
" It's alright, it's wasn't your fault." Josh continue to stare straight ahead.
"No it's not alright, I never intended to hurt you. It's just that when I get angry, I can't calm down easily." Hayley glances at Josh once more.
"Why were you so angry, I thought you weren't jealousy of Tessa?" Josh questions.
"IM NOT!" Hayley snaps "I don't care about you and Tessa dating, it's just this car means a lot to me." Hayley explains.
"I've already told you Tessa and I aren't together, but Why?" Josh ask sensing a spot.
"Why what?" Hayley countered not knowing that she had let some of her past slip from her very own mouth. She had never spoke about her past to anyone other than her grandparents.
"Why does this car mean so much to you?" At that moment Hayley's heart aced. Taking a deep breath she spoke. "It's my dads car, he died when I was nine, this car and a few old t-shirts is all I have to remind me of him." Hayley finishes as they pull into the parking lot of the school.
Josh doesn't know what to say now. He never knew how much this car meant to Hayley. If he could go back, he would have have never let Tessa near Hayley's car, he would have pushes her away, when she kissed him. Hayley climbed out of her car walking around to help Josh. She helps him place his backpack on his back as he leans against her car, before handing him his crutches from the backseat.
"Are you two like together or something now, I mean Sabrina never helped me put on my backpack." Taylor pouted at his girlfriend, who playfully slaps his chest. Both Hayley and Josh shrugs off Taylor's question, and comment . Of course they weren't together, well not yet anyways.
"Whoa, Josh dude what happen?" Jeremy asks.
"Oh nothing just a little accident, I'm sure I can still play guitar with my leg in a cast, as long as I have a chair." Josh chuckles at the last bit. Every one laughs along with him.
"Well the show is actually canceled. The party turned out to be for a retirement home, and well they wanted to go with a more traditional band." Jeremy explains.
"Oh thank god." Hayley stops on her tracts not realizing she had spoken out loud.
"Well don't you sound quite excited that our first show has been canceled." Taylor says suspiciously. Hayley glances around nervously.
"Spill it." Kat smirks.
"I'm the reason Josh's foot is broke, and the reason that Tessa's probably having some type of plastic surgery as we speak. Lets just say I'm grounded for the next month, and wont be able to do anything band related after school." Hayley leans back on her heels.
After a few more minutes of chitchatting, everyone headed inside the school at the sound of the morning bell. The first few classes had went by pretty quick, Hayley had helped Josh to all his classes even when he insisted he would be find, but the worst was still to come; lunch.
