Hayley had turned my proposal down, she had officially shot me out of her life, and there was nothing I could do. I remember that day I took her home after she said no to marrying me. The entire ride was silent. I had chew on my bottom lips and completely focus on the road, to keep myself from breaking down in front of her. She exited the car without saying a word, and with looking back.
She never spoke about the baby, I had a feeling that she didn’t want me to be a part of his or her life. Of course I wanted to take responsibility of the life I created, but I didn’t want to stress her out, because her stress could harm the baby. So I decided to wait until after the baby was born to question my role in his or her life.
All of these thought had played in my mind for the month and a half that had went by. My mother had told me that it was time for me to move on, because I was only wasting my time on a girl that wasn’t worth it, but Hayley is worth it. Ever since we broke up not once have I ever thought about replacing her, nor will I ever. I’ve declared myself updateable, because I don’t want to be with anyone else, but her.
My thoughts were suddenly interrupted, by the sound of the telephone ringing from the nightstand next to the bed I lay in. I hadn’t slept much lately; feeling that something wasn’t right, I could feel it in my bones that something unexpected was to occur when I least expected it. I clicked on the lamp before reaching for the phone, wondering who could be calling at a time like this; it was four in the morning on a week day. I slightly sat up against the head board as I answer the phone.
“Hello.” I groaned, rubbing my eyes as they adjusted to the bright light from the lamp.
“Hello this in Nurse Phelps, calling on behalf of Dr. Alleger of Los Angeles medical center, may I please speak to Mr. Joshua Farro.”
“This is he.” I respond quickly sitting straight up in bed. I knew that something wasn’t right.
“Hayley Williams has gone into labor, and refused to start the procedure without your presents. Dr. Alleger says it’s very important that you get here now, or this could become a danger to the baby.” I had stopped listening after I heard the words: Hayley Williams has gone into labor.
“I’m on my.” I quickly ending the call and practically hopping out of bed, pulling on my jacket, and shoes, not bothering with the unnecessary; like a t-shirt and socks. I then quickly sprint down the hall, to Madalin’s room, where she was sleeping peacefully. I switched on the light before going in search of her shoes and jacket.
I carefully getting her dressed without waking her. I dashed out the front door or my apartment cradled Madalin’s tiny sleeping frame in my arms, while holding onto my keys and cell phone in the other hand. Once reaching the car I strap her into her booster seat and sped off in the direction of the hospital. On the way there I called my family letting them know the good news. I had no real idea what this meant; maybe Hayley did want me to be a part of our child’s life after all.
Considering it was four o’clock in the morning I had no problem finding a parking space close to the entrance. I quickly unstrapped Madalin, taking her into my arms, before jogging into the hospital.
“How may I help you?” the nurse behind the front desk asked.” I gasped taking a deep breathe, as I tried to calm my breathing to answer. “Sir is there something wrong with your daughter?” The nurse asked glancing at Madalin cradled in my arms.
“No.” I breathed.
“Josh!” I heard my name being called from somewhere in the waiting room, I was to worried about Hayley to actually recognize where the person was exactly in waiting room, until I hear my name being called again and felt a hand lightly squeeze my shoulder. I turn to see Sarah, then Heather, and Hayley’s family all seated.
“I tried to call you a few minutes ago, but you didn’t answer. I thought you’d want to be here for the birth of your child, but please don’t tell Hayley I told you, I want to be a part of my god child’s life in the future.” Sarah explained. I couldn’t concentrate on what Sarah was saying as my eye’s landed on Mr. Williams, he was pissed I could tell.
“The doctor called, Hayley needs me! Where is she?” I finally spit out.
“What?” Sarah asked confused.
“The doctor called me.” I snapped as I began to get frustrated with myself for not being able to form a correct sentence under all confusion and stress I was currently in.
“Has anyone seen a Joshua Farro?” A female’s voice suddenly says from behind me.” My head snaps in her direction. “You’re Josh?” She questions. I only nod, not being able to pronounce the simple word yes with my mouth.
“You need to come with me right now.” She tugs on my arm; I hand Madalin off to Sarah, telling her that my family would be here soon, before quickly following after the nurse. Walking down the long hallway millions of thoughts ran through my mind, like I couldn’t believe I was about to be a father again, and how thing would work out between Hayley and I.
“Where’s Hayley?” I asked confused as the nurses drug me into an empty supply like room.
“You have to change into the hospital scrubs before you can see her, its hospital requirement, I’ll wait outside.” She smiled handing the scrubs over before exiting the room. I practically ripped my clothes off, pulling the scrubs on than quickly gathering my thing before rushed out the door.
“So this is your second child?” The nurse questioned as we walked down the hallway towards the room Hayley was in. I didn’t responded, not to be rude, but because I had so much on my mind at the moment. I couldn’t concentrate on a thing anyone around me was saying. I became more nervous as the room Hayley was in came into view. “You’re nervous, aren’t you?” The nurse spoke again; I nod, not really knowing if she notices or not. “It’ll all be fine, just relax.” She stopped for a brief second, giving me a smile before pushing the door open, revealing a room full of doctors, nurses, and a very frustrated Hayley.
“What the fuck took you so long.” Hayley shouted as I entered the room. I ignored the remark taking my place next to her bed; knowing that her anger was only coming from her hormones, and the frustration of her waiting for me to show up. I only smiled holding out my hand for her to take. She rolls her eyes, taking my hands into her with a firm grip.
“Thank god you here.” I hear the doctor mutter…

For a second I put aside everything that had been going on between Hayley and me, as stare down at the beautiful baby boy in her arms. There was no doubt he was mine, he had been in the world for a mere twenty minutes, and I was already overly protective of him. I couldn’t believe this was happening. I was a father again.
“Do you want to hold him?” Hayley suddenly asks. My eyes drifted from the tiny baby in her arms, to her beautiful face. She had just been in labor for almost nine hours. A thin layer of sweat covered her forehead, she wore no make-up, and her faded red hair was slightly messy with a few stray pieces lying on her face, yet she was the still the most beautiful creature I had ever laid eyes on.
“Josh?” Hayley called my name for a second time, pulling me out of my thoughts. I hadn’t even realized that I was day dreaming. “Do you want to hold him?” she asks again patting the small empty space on the bed next to her. I slowly around the bed, and carefully took the seat next to her. Hayley then places him into my arms, reminding me to support his head. The moment was mind blowing, though I had went through this with once before with the birth of Madalin, I just couldn’t wrap my brain around that fact that I now had another child. We sat in silent for at least a half an hour, before either of spoke, staring at are little bundle of joy.
“Josh.” Hayley whispers, stealing my attention for a brief second.”
“Yeah” I answer, before returning my attention back to the baby I now held in my arms.
“Do you love me?” I turn my head to face Hayley; not believing my ears.We stare into each other’s eyes for what felt like eternity. It was like I could see her beautiful soul; our entire future lying a head of us. Without saying I word I leaned in gently crashed my lips into her’s. Surprisingly she kisses me back with little hesitation. We pull apart at the sound of a light knock on the door.
“Hi.” The nurse pokes her head into the room.”
“Hi.” Hayley respond, as well as I did.
“Just came to check on the baby, oh and to bring your things Mr.Farro.” The nurse placed my clothes from earlier onto the couch by the large window.
“Thanks.”
“Can I get you anything Ms. Williams?” She asked Hayley.
“No thank you I’m fine.” Hayley smiled.
“Well I’ll let you two enjoy your little guy for a bit longer, before I return to begin the tests.
“What test?” Hayley asked with a hint of worry.
“Oh no no it’s nothing to worry about, there just hospital required test to determine that you and that baby are healthy enough to go home some soon.” The nurse explains, realizing Hayley’s sudden worried expression. “I’ll be back soon.” She says walking out the door.
“You know you didn’t really answer my question.” Hayley says once the nurse had completely exited the room. I signed taking a deep breath, handing her back are son, before climbing off the bed, and walking over to the large window.
“It was just a question Josh you don’t have to leave.” Hayley says quickly.
“I’m not going anywhere.” I say looking out upon the busy city of Los Angeles. I knew how I felt about Hayley, but it was hard to put it in words: other than just saying Hey I do love you. “I know I’ve given you every reason in the world not to trust me Hayley, but though all this crazy shit that’s happened, not once have I ever lied to you about love you. There’s no one on the face of the earth I love as much as you.”
“That not true, what about the children.”
“Yes I love my children, but that’s a different type of love and you know that. I know we’ll never be the same as we first were, because we’ll be better. I really want to give us a second chance. You don’t have to marry me today, tomorrow, or even next year, but I want to spend the rest of my life you. I’ll never give up on us Hayles.” I single tear fell upon Hayley’s delicate pale cheek before more was to follow.
“Please don’t cry.” I rushed over to her taking a seat next to her again, gently pulling her into my arms. “Shhhh! It’ll be ok.” I whisper in her ear; placing a kiss on her tear stained cheek.
“Do you really mean that?”
“Every word of it.”
“I love you too, and sorry I walked away.“
“Shhhh! It’s, ok I don’t blame you for how you felt, and besides it was my entirely fault, but let’s not discussed this now, let’s just enjoy the moment.” Hayley nods before resting her head on my shoulder.
“Do you maybe think the baby and I could move in with you and Madalin, once were out of the hospital?” Hayley asked still resting her head on my shoulder as we look down at are son who was sleeping peacefully.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“Good, because it’s gonna be your duty to change all those dippers.” Hayley giggled. I let out a light chuckle, placing another kiss on her cheek.
Hayley and I sat admiring son, randomly calling out names that we like, but came up with nothing at first. Soon are family joined us. Most of them were happy, or maybe everyone was happy, with the exception of my mother, who refused to hold Neil Joey Farro, that what we named are baby boy. Mom said she had a feeling that he wasn’t mine, but I knew he was.
And well for Hayley’s father, of course he was upset that I knocked his daughter up unwedded. Though this seemed like a replay of how Jenna and ended up together years ago, I know one thing this time:
I in love, and it was no longer a secret.
